Heilbronn / City for Families / experimenta Heilbronn
Southern Germany’s first large science centre has been open since mid-November 2009, explaining technical and scientific phenomena to children and grown-ups alike in a fun way.
Some 150 interactive exhibits in four elaborately staged theme worlds - Energy & Environment (Power Station), Technology & Innovation (Workshop),
Man & Communication (Network), Man & Leisure Time (Play Zone) – invite "experimenta" visitors to explore and understand natural sciences and technology.
Nearly 50 construction and exhibition
companies transformed the seven-
storey Hagenbucher building into a
world of researching and
experimenting. Discover your
strengths in seven unique
"Talent Development Areas",
each of which is dedicated to
another section of the exhibition.
This is where you may find answers to
questions sparked by your tour and
where your newly discovered skills may be deepened by putting them to use.
The "Academy of Young Researchers" boosts the creativity of children and young persons and helps them discover scientific and technological principles on their own. This is where, under the guidance of professional educators, pre-school and school groups may find out how things work and perform experiments which go beyond regular classroom activities. The studios and laboratories are each geared to a specific age group and may also be booked without a tour of the exhibition.
All that brain work has made you hungry? Visitors of all ages are served culinary delights in Umberto Scuccia's restaurant, which is called "melaverde" during the day and "allegro" in the evenings.
The City of Heilbronn and Dieter Schwarz Stiftung gGmbH funded together the conversion of the 1930s oilseed storehouse and its new annex, with almost half of the city's share being refinanced by further sponsors. The building’s historic columns were mostly preserved; however, in the top storey - where they were geometrically positioned in the room - they had to go to make space for an event location that seats 200 persons. From here, visitors may access the rooftop viewing platform offering stunning views of the city centre and the Neckar valley. Anyone who is bold enough to look straight down will see the "Talent Garden" with its outdoor exhibits 22 metres below.
